Why Smart Ring Sizing Is Different From Jewellery
Standard jewellery rings are sized for comfort and aesthetics. A ring that's slightly loose looks fine and feels fine. A smart ring that's slightly loose is a broken product.
Smart rings use PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors — optical sensors that shine light into your skin and measure the reflected signal to calculate heart rate, HRV, and blood oxygen. This requires consistent skin contact with consistent pressure. The difference between a properly seated ring and a loose one can be a 30–50% drop in PPG signal quality, which translates directly to inaccurate readings.
The ring also sits against your skin for 20+ hours a day. Too tight and it restricts circulation — which affects sensor readings and causes discomfort. Too loose and the PPG sensor lifts off the skin with every movement, producing garbage data and faster battery drain as the sensor works harder to compensate.
The right fit for a smart ring: You should feel light resistance when removing the ring — not pain, not friction, but a gentle "this is secure" feeling. The ring should not rotate freely on your finger when you're moving normally. If it spins, it's too loose. If you see a visible indentation or feel pressure after removal, it's too tight.
How to Measure Your Finger for a Smart Ring
Most people have their jewellery ring size and use that. Don't. Jewellery sizing systems vary by country and brand, and many people wear their jewellery rings either too loose or at a size that isn't ideal for all-day sensor wear. Here's the correct approach:
Measure at the end of the day
Fingers swell in heat and after exercise. Evening measurement gives you the largest size your finger reaches — a ring that fits in the evening will fit all day.
Use a flexible measuring tape or paper strip
Wrap a piece of paper or string around the base of the finger (the part where a ring would sit — not the knuckle). Mark the point where it meets and measure against a ruler in millimetres. Divide by 3.14 (π) to get your diameter. That's your base measurement.
Measure both hands
Your dominant hand typically runs slightly larger due to more use and circulation. Always measure the specific finger you plan to wear the ring on. Left and right can differ by half a size.
Account for knuckle width
If your knuckle is significantly wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that passes the knuckle comfortably — you want the ring to seat at the base, not at the knuckle. Sensora's flexible titanium band accommodates more knuckle variation than rigid metal rings.
| Finger Diameter (mm) | US Ring Size | EU Ring Size | Sensora Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15.3 – 16.1 mm | 5 – 5.5 | 48 – 50 | Small |
| 16.2 – 17.0 mm | 6 – 6.5 | 51 – 53 | Small (snug) / Medium (loose) |
| 17.1 – 18.0 mm | 7 – 7.5 | 54 – 56 | Medium |
| 18.1 – 19.0 mm | 8 – 8.5 | 57 – 59 | Medium (snug) / Large (loose) |
| 19.1 – 20.0 mm | 9 – 9.5 | 60 – 62 | Large |

Smart Ring Sizing vs Regular Jewellery Sizing
Even if you know your jewellery ring size, smart ring sizing has three key differences that affect which size you should choose:
All-Day Wear vs Occasional Wear
Jewellery rings come off regularly. Smart rings don't. Over 20 hours of wear, a ring that's 0.5mm too large becomes noticeable. A ring that's 0.5mm too small becomes uncomfortable. For 24/7 sensor wear, err toward the slightly looser side of your measurement — the sensor electronics need consistent contact, not pressure.
Internal Electronics Change the Geometry
Smart rings have sensors, circuit boards, and batteries inside the band. This changes the inner surface profile — a smart ring in "size 7" has slightly more internal volume than a plain metal ring in "size 7" to accommodate components. The result: smart rings often fit tighter than equivalently-sized jewellery rings. Size up by half if you're between sizes.
Sensor Contact Zone Matters
The PPG sensor sits on the inner surface of the ring, directly opposite the signet area on the outside. The sensor window needs skin contact — not just inside the ring, but on the specific inner surface area. A ring that's too small may contact the wrong part of the finger, missing the sensor window's optimal contact zone. Our sensor guide explains exactly how PPG works and why the contact zone matters so much.
Weight Distribution Is Different
Sensora's Grade 5 titanium shell is lighter than most jewellery rings of equivalent width, but the sensor module inside adds weight at a specific point on the band. This changes the "feel" of the ring on your finger. During your sizing kit trial, wear the ring for at least 30 minutes doing normal activities (walking, typing) before deciding — initial feel isn't the same as all-day comfort.
The 3 Most Common Smart Ring Sizing Mistakes
We've seen these mistakes repeatedly in customer support data and review analysis. Here's what to avoid — and why each one causes problems:
Using Your Jewellery Ring Size Directly
As covered above: jewellery sizing systems vary wildly, smart rings fit differently, and all-day sensor wear changes the fit requirements. Your size-7 wedding band doesn't mean a size-7 smart ring will work for you.
Choosing Based on Knuckle Fit
The ring passes over your knuckle to go on, but it seats at the base of your finger. If you choose a size based on how it feels going over the knuckle, you'll end up with a ring that's too loose at the base — exactly where the sensor needs to sit. Use the base measurement, not the knuckle.
Not Testing During Activity
A ring that feels fine when you're standing still may rotate and lift off the skin when you're walking, typing, or exercising. Always test your potential ring size during movement — take a walk, do some hand exercises, type for 10 minutes. The ring should stay seated. If it spins when you're active, go down half a size. See our durability report for why sensor lift matters so much.
How Sensora Makes Sizing Easier
Most smart ring companies send you a ring based on a self-reported measurement, then charge you for return shipping if you're wrong. Sensora does it differently:
Every Sensora order includes a free physical sizing kit — real metal ring sizers in your target size range, shipped before your ring ships. Try them at home for a few days. Walk around. Sleep in them (they're for sizing, not your final ring). Confirm which size feels right. Then your Sensora ships in that confirmed size.
If you're still unsure after the kit, our support team will help you interpret the measurements and make a final call. No charge for the kit. No charge for exchange shipping if you still get it wrong. The sizing kit is included because getting the size right is the single most important factor in whether the ring actually works.
Free Sizing Kit, Included
Every order ships with a physical sizing kit first — actual ring sizers in your size range so you can confirm before the ring ships. No guessing. No premature commitment.

Sensora's sensor is positioned to contact the fingertip's most consistent capillary bed — the area with the most reliable PPG signal. The ring geometry is designed to seat this zone against the skin in the correct size range. See the sensor guide for the full technical explanation.
